- About Us

North Wapiti Siberian Husky Kennels
Iditarod 2001 -'Sponsor-a-dog' Program

As part of our fundraising we offered people the opportunity to sponsor an Iditarod dog. For $250 Cdn. they get their name listed on this website, one of our limited edition prints by BC artist Denise Linley, a certificate with the name of their dog, and their name embroidered onto the dog's Iditarod harness.

Of the dogs listed, twenty of these will accompany us up to Alaska next year and only 16 will be chosen for our team. We cannot guarantee anyone's sponsored dog will make the final 16 - but certificates and prints will be issued regardless of whether or not the dog participates in Iditarod.

All Dogs are now spoken for - THANK YOU to all for your support!

The Dogs in the Training Pool

Sissy
The Flying Nun of NorthWapiti

'Sissy' is one of my few female leaders. A little shy with strangers, but a bossy confident gal in harness. She is a veteran of the 2000 Iditarod.

Smiley
NorthWapiti's Guy Smiley

'Smiley' has stepped up into the position of leader! This happy handsome boy is a pleasure to work with! Smiley was a member of our 2000 Iditarod team.

Smiley has again been sponsored by his friend Jackie Symonds of South Carolina. Thanks so much Jackie!!

Orion
NorthWapiti's Orion the Hunter

'Orion' was the youngest member of our 2000 Iditarod team. Barring unforeseen illness or injury, he seems like a shoe in for this year!

Kathleen Byrd has been gracious enough to sponsor Orion!

Draco
NorthWapiti's Draco

A little goofier and ganglier version of his brother Orion, 'Draco' is impossible not to love!

BIG thanks to Peter and MaryAnn Yasyshyn, Mark's Uncle and Aunt for again sponsoring Draco!

Westaskiwin's Sir Gallahad

'Surge' is a young but remarkably hard working dog. He is definitely one of Karen's favorites!

Surge thanks P. Jill Frick of Toronto, Ontario for sponsoring his run to Nome!

Ch. NorthWapiti's Oreo

'Oreo' is a multiple Group Placing show dog and a true 'cheerleader' in harness. A veteran of the 2000 Iditarod, she has really begun to shine as a leader!

'The Cookie Monster' has been sponsored by our local 'hangout' - The Perryvale Country Store! We are very grateful for the tremendous support that Patty and Phyllis give us!

Willo's WildRose of N'Wapiti

'Rosie' will be following in her father, Ch. Stormwatch's Montana SDO, who is a 2x Iditarod finisher!

Rosie would like to thank one of her breeders, Lois Leonard of Willo Siberians for her support!

Butch
NorthWapiti's Butch Cassidy SD

We often refer to 'Butchie' as our 'scud missile'. With him in lead - you know that you are going somewhere FAST - you are just not certain where it is you are going! We are busy fine tuning his leading skills for Iditarod! Butchie's strength was a great asset for us during the 2000 Iditarod.

Butchie has been sponsored by our friend (and gifted writer!), Heather Brennan! Thanks to Heather and all the Nuthatch Gang!

Mork
Chuchinka's Torino

'Mork' is a big, leggy boy. His huge appetite and good work ethic make him a asset to our team!

Debbie and Lawrence Custer have been kind enough to sponsor Mork!

Sundance
NorthWapiti's Sundance Kid

'Sunny' is a love. A team dog he is a hard worker and a value to our team!

Sunny gives big kisses and thanks to Barb and John Armour of St. Paul, Minnesota for sponsoring him.

Kaylinn
Chuchinka's San Antonio Rose

'Kaylinn' came to us on a trial basis from Bob and Loreen Bridges. She is putting her nose to the grindstone to earn a place in our team!

Kaylinn has been sponsored by our good friends and mentors (and her breeders!), Bob and Loreen Bridges of Chuchinka Kennels, Prince George, BC

Icey
NorthWapiti's Meomar Iceman

February 15, 1995 - September 13, 2000

'Icey' won't be with us in body this time, but we KNOW he will be out on the trail with us in spirit. Our dear friends and his first owners, Jackie and Chris Marshall of Invermere, BC know this too and are sponsoring his 'spirit run' to Nome.

Grover
NorthWapiti's Super Grover

With the retirement of several of our lead dogs, 'Grover' is stepping to the front of the line as the main leader of our team. He was a fixture at the front of the team in all the races we did last season!

Grover thanks Karen's brother, Jim for sponsoring him on his way to Nome! Jim is a key supporter of our team and we sure appreciate it!

Gus
NorthWapiti's Mr. Snuffleupagus

'Gus' is another of the muppet litter and like the rest of his littermates, is a key leader in our team! Gus was a member of our 2000 Iditarod team.

Gus is happy to announce that he has been sponsored by Robert Ford of Champaign, Illinois. Bob is a big supporter of the team and Gus (and Karen) were pleased to get a chance to meet him at the start of Iditarod last year!

Camilla
NorthWapiti's Camilla

A little dynamo in harness. 'Camilla' is a strong puller and dynamic leader - especially for her size! Camilla led the team out of the restart on Iditarod last year!

Elsie Chadwick, the lovely woman that maintains the archives for the Siberian Husky Club of Canada has again sponsored Camilla!

Nik
Chuchinka's Nicolia II

'Nik' has forsaken his career as a sprint dog with Robin Klassen of BC to come try his hand a distance racing!

Mark's parents, Harvey and Sylvia Ramstead of Calgary, Alberta have been kind enough to sponsor Nik!

Jetty
Turick's Sand Storm

'Jetty' started off her career as a sprint dog in the US. After a time living a life of luxury in Lethbridge, she is now going to try her 'paw' at distance running!

Jetty thanks Glen Todd for helping her down the trail this year!

Striker
Tumnatki Bosen NorthWapiti

'Striker' is a well built, hard working sled dog - and darn handsome too! Striker was a valuable member of our 2000 Iditarod team.

'Striker' wishes to thank his breeder, Karen Damoth Yeargain of Sisters, Oregon for sponsoring him.

Ch. NorthWapiti's Against All Odds

'Norman' is a very unique and lovable boy! A favorite in the kennel - for sure!

Norman has been sponsored by the 'Eastern Ramsteads' - Carol Ramstead, Wayne Ramstead, Arvin Ramstead, LuAnn & Rick Cunliffe, Gail & Mark Leslie, Valerie & Arthur De Pierre, Melanie & Kevin Hupe! Phew - Norman is glad he doesn't have to have all that on his harness! Many thanks!

Jumper
Alaskan's Jumper of Anadyr

A new addition to our kennel, Jumper is already showing us her stuff! We expect her to be running up front for a good part of Iditarod!

Jumper wishes to thank Karen's Mom, Morna Murray of Calgary, Alberta for sponsoring her.

Joey
Alaskan's Georgio of Anadyr

'Joey's' bloodlines make her well suited for Iditarod - her daddy is a 3 time finisher. We have already started working her in lead.

Liz, Don, Cindy, Chuck, Jenny and Blake
JEDEYE Racing Siberian Huskies

Jake
Hawk's NorthWapiti Vindicator

'Jake' is big and leggy. He is always the first one to want to get up and get going down the trail! Jake is an Iditarod 2000 veteran.

Jake is happy to have been sponsored by his friend and last year's sponsor, Marcie Yont of Calgary, Alberta.
Joining Jake's sponsorship team this year, are Marcie's parents Don & Louise Yont.
We thank them all!

Northome's Visa

Visa's breeders, Al and Ann Stead, tell me that they named her Visa because she 'is everywhere you want her to be'. This focused, speedy lady is a definite asset to our team.

Visa has been sponsored by Melissa and Terry Beers of California! We appreciate it guys!

 Spider
Kainai's Spider

'Spidey' is now coming into her running prime. She is a big, solid gal with lots of power!

Diana Krauss and Rob Baker of Coldstream, BC have been nice enough to sponsor Spidey's Iditarod attempt.

Cassie
NorthWapiti's Casseopia

'Cassie' is working hard to ensure a position on the team. I think she will be there!

Although Cassie is not fuzzy and white, she has been sponsored by Samoyed owner and musher, Sherri Dalton of Edmonton! Thanks Sherri!!

Raptor
Chuchinka's Raptor

'Raptor' is another of those 'speedy' dogs from Robin Klassen. He really seems to be enjoying his try at distance running!

Raptor has been sponsored by some very special and hardworking Race fans - June, Zel, and Mark. These three are very active in efforts to stop the misinformation about the Race that is put out on the Internet. Thank you so much for your support guys!

Rowdy
NorthWapiti's Rowdy Yates

'Rowdy' is a boomerang dog. This time he seems determined to stay and his work in harness is showing it!

We would like to thank Brendon Armstrong for sponsoring Rowdy! I understand Brendon keeps a picture of Rowdy on his wall at home - that support is sure to help him make the team!!

Chester
Chuchinka's Pathfinder

There is just not enough I can say about 'Chester'. When we first met him at 5 weeks of age - we just knew he was a born leader. He was a key member of last year's Iditarod team. There are just not enough nice things we can say about this boy!

Chester has once again been sponsored by Nancy Ingram and the Golden Retrievers of Heartprint Kennels in Grande Prairie, Alberta. We greatly appreciate her enthusiastic support!

Mannie
Ch. Kainai's Anchorman

'Mannie' is a recent (and handsome) addition to our kennel! This strong, young dog is going to fit well into our team!

Vivian Delude of Red Deer, Alberta.
