- About Us

North Wapiti Siberian Husky Kennels
Iditarod 2004 -'Sponsor-a-dog' Program
All dogs have now been sponsored!

As part of our fundraising we are offering the opportunity to sponsor a specific Iditarod dog. For $300 Cdn. sponsors get their name listed on this website, one of our limited edition prints by BC artist Denise Linley, a 2004 Ceremonial Start bandana (that will be mailed from Nome) and a certificate.

Of the dogs listed, 20 of these will accompany us up to Alaska next year and only 16 will be chosen for our team. We cannot guarantee anyone's sponsored dog will make the final 16 - but certificates, bandanas, and prints will be issued to all sponsors regardless of whether or not their dog of choice participates in Iditarod.

The Dogs in the Training Pool

Grover
NorthWapiti's Super Grover
IDITAROD VETERAN

There is just not enough good things to say to do Grover justice. Grover is, without any question, Karen's favorite dog in the kennel. Our MAIN leader - he is a SUPER dog!

Well Grover is certainly the dog that we get the most inquiries about sponsoring. How do you get to be Grover's sponsor? Well, being Karen's favorite (okay, she only has one) brother helps! Thanks to Jim Murray of Calgary, Alberta for sponsoring Grover again this year.

SmileyHeadDel.jpg (5286 bytes)
Ch. NorthWapiti's Guy Smiley
IDITAROD VETERAN

Smiley is definitely a favorite in the kennel. Most folks that meet him comment on the 'twinkle' in his eye! He is one of our main leaders.

Smiley and Surge have the same sponsors - Daniel, Julia, Elizabeth, Alexander, Tristan, Megan and Melony Brown of New Madison, Ohio. Many thanks to the Browns for coming aboard to help us out!

OrionHeadDel.jpg (5969 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Orion the Hunter
IDITAROD VETERAN

Orion is, in our opinion, one of the finest built, most capable athletes on our team. A leader, who has not quite filled all his potential up front.

Orion once again thanks Alice and Travis Fitzgerald for helping him get to Nome - Karen and Mark send along their thanks too!!

DracoHeadDel.jpg (11242 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Draco
IDITAROD VETERAN

A little goofier and ganglier version of his brother Orion, Draco is impossible not to love!

Draco sends one of his patented full body hugs to his good friend Megan and Randee McQueen of Campbell, California for sponsoring his 2004 run!

Ch. NorthWapiti's Loki
IDITAROD VETERAN

Loki is well named after the Norse god of mischief! But he is maturing and becoming more serious about his job in harness everyday!

Loki gives big hugs to Deb Custer of Abilene, Texas for sponsoring him this year!

NorthWapiti's Oden
IDITAROD VETERAN

Odie is one of the up and coming stars in our team. He was the youngest dog in our 2002 team and a finisher of the John Beargrease Marathon in Minnesota. He is the brother of Loki.

Odie the Coyote once again thanks June Price of Lake Helen, Florida, the 'leaddog' of the Idita-support group, for sponsoring him on his way to Nome!

SurgeHeadDel.jpg (7226 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Sir Gallahad
IDITAROD VETERAN

Karen's nickname for Surge has always been 'the Puppy'. At the Iditarod finish line we decided that no longer suited this hard working adult dog. He's still shopping for a new nickname!

Smiley and Surge have the same sponsors - Daniel, Julia, Elizabeth, Alexander, Tristan, Megan and Melony Brown of New Madison, Ohio. Many thanks to the Browns for coming aboard to help us out!

Gus
NorthWapiti's Mr. Snuffleupagus
IDITAROD VETERAN

Gus is another of the muppet litter and like the rest of his littermates, is a key leader in our team. Gus was in lead for the Ceremonial Start, the Restart, and the Finish line of the 2001 Iditarod!

As every year, Gus wishes to thank his good friend, Bob Ford/Sabaka Kennels for sponsoring his journey down the Iditarod trail.

Chuchinka's Pathfinder
IDITAROD VETERAN

It's hard to know where to start talking about Chester. The fact that he has his own Fan Club should tell you something about the amazing personality of this boy! He is the dog we always take to school visits. His passion for kids is only second to his passion for running (and dinner). He is also one of the toughest dogs we have ever met in harness.

Chester has been sponsored again this year by the World's Greatest & Most Loyal Fan Club - his own...

Many thanks to Rio and Sahara, the Golden Girls at Heartprint Kennels as returning sponsors of Chester. They have sponsored him for Iditarod 2000, 2001, 2003 and now 2004!

Kaylinn
Chuchinka's San Antonio Rose
IDITAROD VETERAN

Kaylinn was the surprise star of our 2001 Iditarod. She is continuing to put excellent, solid performances in in races, that are making her very valued in the team.

Kaylinn has much to thank Bob and Loreen Bridges of Chuchinka Kennels in Prince George, B.C. for. First off, they are her breeders; secondly, for giving her the chance to come here and be a sled dog; and thirdly, for sponsoring her each year she has been here! She (and we) are very grateful to them.

Camilla
NorthWapiti's Camilla
IDITAROD VETERAN

A little dynamo in harness. Camilla is a strong puller and dynamic leader - especially for her size!

Camilla thanks her friend Mary Curtis of Princeton, New Jersey for helping her get to Nome this year!

Nik
Chuchinka's Nicolia II
IDITAROD VETERAN

Nik is the most ANNOYING dog in our team. Noisy and opinionated, we still wouldn't trade him for anything! :)

Nik and we thank Jamie West and the gang from Westrunner Kennels in Willow, Alaska for supporting his trip to Nome! Jamie is a dear friend and our 'front' person in Alaska, often storing and preparing things for our visit there. We'd be lost without her. You can look for Jamie on Karen's second sled at the Ceremonial Start of Iditarod this year!

Ch. Kainai's Anchorman
IDITAROD VETERAN

Mannie has secured his spot in the history books. He is the first CKC champion showdog and the only Group Placing dog to finish Iditarod. What more can we say - except that we are very proud to own him!

Mannie has once again been sponsored by Kay and Jen Arnold of San Leandro, California! Thanks ladies from 'the handsome Man' and all of us at NorthWapiti.

SqueakyHeadDel.jpg (4192 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Robert E. Lee
IDITAROD VETERAN

Squeaky is a littermate to Surge, although he just came to live with us last summer. Called 'Rob' by his former owners, Mark nicknamed him 'Squeaky' because of the strange noise he makes because of being debarked! Sadly, it has stuck! 'Squeak' is a handsome and hardworking boy, who looks very much like his grandfather - Spud!

Ursula and John Rempel of Winnipeg, Manitoba are again sponsoring Squeaky. That is very fitting in that they helped get Squeaky up to us from his previous home in Oklahoma. Squeak, and we, will always be grateful to them!

DenaliHeadDel.jpg (9331 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Denali
IDITAROD VETERAN

Big, hard working and GOOFY - Denali was a delight to have on our 2003 Iditarod team!

Denali would like to, once again, thank the globe trotting June Shelley for sponsoring his run to Nome. For a look at a fascinating life, take time to visit June's website at http://www.juneshelley.com/

NahanniHeadDel.jpg (5257 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Nahanni
IDITAROD VETERAN

Nahanni is another beautiful girl from the 'National Park' litter. Fast, focused, and tough as nails! A real asset to the team!

Nahanni's sponsors say - "Go Karen & Team, All The Way" - John, Barb, Sundog Siberians--Sunny, Crista, Sweet Pea.

OlenaHeadDel.jpg (8552 bytes)
Alaskan's Olena of Anadyr
IDITAROD VETERAN

Although nicknamed 'Rolly Polly Ollie' - there is nothing 'rolly or polly' about this dog. Olena is all hard muscle and attitude! Definitely the most gung-ho of the 2 year olds. An absolute FORCE in harness!

Marlene and Doug Daniels of Belgrade, Montana sponsored the sweet and loveable Freya and seemed to feel they needed to balance that 'sweetness' out and have now, in addition to Freya, sponsored the evil and outspoken dynamo - Olena. Can't wait to see you in Anchorage in March Marlene!!!

NorthWapiti's Kobuk

Kobuk is a big, leggy, goofy boy. A littermate to Denali, this will be his first season vying for a spot on the main string.

Kobuk has again been sponsored by Lee DesJardins and his old kennel mates - Sammie and Slik now living with her in Ancaster, Ontario.
Lee came out to the kennel on holidays in 2002 and picked out Kobuk personally - he was the only one that didn't try to knock her over!

NorthWapiti's Sprite

Cute, athletic, and energetic - we have high hopes for this Butch x Jumper daughter!

Sprite thanks Heather Walls of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a veteran Bootie Brigade seamstress and devoted owner of a rescued Siberian, for boosting her "over the fence" on her way to Nome!

KluaneHeadDel.jpg (5760 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Kluane

Kluane is the beautiful, delicate sister of Denali and Kobuk. She is a dynamo in harness though! We just have to get her past her picky eating habits!

Karen's Mom - Morna Murray of Calgary, Alberta is still hoping that the dog she sponsors will make the Iditarod team. She is 0 for 3. The pressure is on Kluane!

NorthWapiti's Pepsi

Harnessing this high energy gal is our version of the 'Pepsi Challenge'. If we can funnel that energy into running - she will be an amazing sled dog!

Pepsi wishes to thank the members of the NorCal Siberian Husky Club - Northern California for sponsoring her first shot at going to Nome!

Ch. NorthWapiti's Freya

Freya is one of the smallest members of our team, but she is quick and focused! Still young, she is showing great promise in lead!

Once again Freya is sponsored by her good friends Marlene and Doug Daniels of Belgrade, Montana. Thanks guys!

CrunchieHeadDel.jpg (5956 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Crunchie

Crunchie is one of the most promising young leaders in the kennel. Being a Grover son, I guess we should have predicted that!

Crunchie thanks Dana and Judy Kevelder of Pickerington, Ohio for sponsoring him as he works to get to Iditarod for the first time!

wpe6.jpg (4654 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Skor

Skor is a big lovable Grover son. Not the 'sharpest knife in the drawer', but hardworking and promising, just the same!

Skor is sponsored by Laurie Macpherson of Ashton, Ontario - in memory of her two Siberians (wanna be sled dogs) Kulak and Atimo (Ch. Neysasibe's Kulak and Neysasibe's Chance of Snow).

NorthWapiti's Snickers

Snickers is a perpetual motion machine - always on the move - except when she is getting snuggles!

Pat Ford of Cisco, IL is a name well known to all of us at NorthWapiti. Pat, along with her son, Bob have been tremendous sponsors of us from the beginning of our Iditarod adventures! Snickers thanks her for coming aboard as her sponsor this year!

BarqHead.jpg (5521 bytes)
NorthWapiti's Barq, He's got bite

Barq promises to be one of the fastest dogs we own. He looks and acts a lot like his half brothers - Draco, Orion, and Surge!

After a couple years sponsoring his Daddy (NorthWapiti's Butch Cassidy SD), Heather Brennan of Georgetown, Ontario is now sponsoring Barq on his first attempt on going to Nome. Butchie retiring has left some big 'paws' to fill, but this youngster shows great potential of being 'the one'.

NorthWapiti's Dasher

Dasher is very much unlike her sweet and loveable Mom, Kara. She is bossy, opinionated, and demanding of getting her own way! I think she will be an amazing sled dog!

Dasher has a very special group of sponsors; Maureen Lamb, Ursula Rempel, Pat Tetrault, Mary Ann Strock, Cheryl Dawson, Lois Leonard, Barb Branham, Kris Biagrotti, and Rita Young-Jones; In honour of the work done by the Save Our Siberians Siberspace Rescue Fund

Chlout's Hector of NorthWapiti

The way to distinguish Hector in the kennel is by looking at his tail. His over-eager Mom nipped the tip of it off at birth. It sure doesn't seem to bother him though! Friendly and eager, I look forward to his contribution to the team this winter!

Hector is sponsored by his admirers in Kansas; Ann Conser, Susan Davies, Shanean Hicks, Ruth Lloyd and Laura Neville Woods.

Chlout's Hilda of NorthWapiti

Pretty, friendly, and hard working - we are very excited about Hilda's promise!

Hilda thanks Donna Quante for sponsoring her first Iditarod. We can only hope Hilda is inspired on her run by Donna's former NorthWapiti Iditarod finisher - Sissy

Chlout's Herman of NorthWapiti

'The Hermanator', as Mark often calls him - Herman is all business. He just wants to get to work!

Herman thanks Mark's folks, Harvey and Sylvia Ramstead of Calgary for sponsoring his season. Maybe Herman will actually pose for a picture with them, unlike their previous sponsored dog!!

Clout's Moses of Velikaya

Moses just came to live with us this spring, but he has done some racing in his past, including finishing the 2002 Quest 250 race. Expect him to be a key player in the team this winter!

Moses might have the honor of being sponsored from the farthest away location - NSW, Australia, home of Iditarod fan, Sue Smith. Many thanks Mate!

NorthWapiti's Valkyrie Kara
IDITAROD VETERAN

Kara is a littermate to Freya, Odie, and Loki. She took a good part of last season off to raise
a litter of pups (Dasher and Dancer) but looks very forward to getting back into harness.

Kara may have been the last dog to be sponsored for this year's race, but a group effort has made her the mostly highly
sponsored dog in our Iditarod History! Thank you to all of those below for stepping up to help sponsor this lovely girl.

Thanks again to all of Kara's Sponsors!
